Today the nurses went to Canaan to do a mobile clinic. It is such a desolate tent camp, it left the volunteers feeling a little discouraged. They treated many sick patients, but the people of Canaan need so much more help than we could give them today, when they don’t even have clean water to drink.

The dentists had a productive morning but a slow afternoon, with some very difficult teeth to pull. 51 teeth in all. With tomorrow as their last work day here and not knowing when we will have dentists here again, they are looking forward to a very busy day tomorrow.

The pair of dentists in Haiti pulled a total of 60 teeth today. They hope one day to be able to provide more than just extractions here, such as fillings and cleanings. The people are so grateful to have the dentists here, though, and the need is very great.

The boy who had been electrocuted and the baby with malaria both returned this morning for a follow-up. They seem to be doing well.

At the construction site, the foundation continues and so does the fun. During breaks, the neighborhood children are teaching the construction volunteer Creole, and he is learning fast!

The dentists pulled another 51.5 teeth today.

We also had quite a few interesting patients in our emergency room today. This morning a boy who had been electrocuted came in. He had grabbed an open wire yesterday evening and burned his hand badly. He will lose mobility in the hand, but otherwise he should be okay. The good news is that he has a family who really cares about his We also had a 15 month old patient come in to us with malaria. He had been sick for three days, but was unable to come to the clinic yesterday due to the gas strike, and today he had a fever of 105. We began chloroquine, and he will hopefully return to the clinic tomorrow. A woman with TB also came in. She had been treated for TB for 8 months 2 years ago. It had been dormant. However, when the earthquake destroyed the TB treatment center, she hadn’t received treatment since.  We referred her to another TB clinic where she will receive treatment.

At the construction site, the foundation progresses on the new house as we continue to carry buckets of cement, water, and wheelbarrows of rocks. Rilbert, the father with the sick boy, is working with us on the construction site, and very grateful for the work we give him.

In Haiti today the pair of dentists extracted a total of 51.5 teeth! They did a great job, as well as did our lab tech and our nurses. At the construction site, we carried cement and rocks to continue the foundation for the new house. It was a very productive day and we’re looking forward to the rest of the week with a great team.

Jack is on the way home from Guatemala. The rest of the dental team arrived in Haiti today and went on a trip to the waterfall. I had a wonderful time sharing at the Brooksby Retirement Village Protestant Service and then having brunch with the missions committee. After the earthquake they made a substantial donation for houses in Haiti, and have changed the lives of almost 5 families.  After I left I stopped at a mall to pick something up . As I was crossing the parking lot I heard some one yell out,” there is Gale.” I looked up and saw some Young Life kids who had gone to Guatemala in Feb waving. It was exciting to see so many of PID supports in so many places today.

Very technical meeting today in the office with one member joining us via camera. Bill has designed a wonderful database for us, we are almost ready to use it.
My favorite part of the day was in the afternoon , spending it with my
Oldest grandchild. This year I am trying hard to catch up on family time I missed because of all of the time I spent in Haiti. We had so much fun.

After a profound and educational week here in Haiti, we said goodbye to the team from Gordon and our other volunteers early on Friday morning, but not, of course, without a farewell party and much dancing the night before. The group left on an exciting day for Haiti, with the former president Aristide returning from his 7-year exile in South Africa. Only time will tell how his presence here will affect the results of the upcoming election.

Dee left us as well this morning, returning home after her week-long, spring break stay with us here to finish out the semester at UMass Dartmouth. With such a large group here for the past week, the grounds at the clinic here in Blanchard feel truly empty. It does provide a good opportunity, though, for us interns to catch up on work that often gets set aside when we’re joined by larger groups, not to mention a bit of rest and relaxation!

All is quiet this evening in Blanchard, and we’re hoping for a smooth and problem-free election day tomorrow!

The team from Gordon reported a slow day at the work site today. However, with their progress over the past few days, they’ve nearly finished setting the foundation for the new house. A few of the others from their team stayed back at the clinic to help the Haitian masons as they built a wall for the new bunkhouse bathroom. Meanwhile, our pre-med student continued her work in the lab, and 2 of the other Gordon students spent some time working with both the small business and child sponsorship programs this morning.

The most excitement, however, came at lunch, when we celebrated the birthdays of two of our team members, one who turned 20 yesterday and another who turned 30 today! We’re glad they both were able to begin a new decade of their lives here in Haiti with us!

Another hard-working, successful day for the team at the construction site in Haiti. They were able to finish digging the foundation for one of the new houses and began moving rocks into place to be set soon. Ruth had another positive series of counseling sessions during the day, and her husband was able to hand out more gifts to sponsored children. A few of the team members hand another educational day in the lab and pharmacy, while others spent the afternoon organizing and playing games with the kids. This afternoon in the clinic was more stressful than usual, but the medical staff was able to handle the emergencies calmly and professionally.

Mountain land. The meetings continue about the land for the village people. The land is beautiful but it is still up a mountain.
We did a clinic in the tents on the mountain and the sadness of the scene was overwhelming. The woman who did first aid for 5000 tent people didn’t even have Tylenol to give for fevers. I visited people in their tents and talked to them about their lives and situations, their hopes for the future. This is were I love to be .

Arrived in Haiti today. Brad Smith landed in the morning and started working non stop. Amazing!!

Tomorrow, we will look at land and hold a mini-clinic on the mountain. It is the beginning of Carnival, so two days off.

After some very special and heartfelt words from our social worker Mr. Genois, we said an extended goodbye to the YogaKids group and our two construction team members this morning. It was really wonderful to have them here with us for a week, and it was clear that the experience left a profound impact on all of them. We hope to see all of them back in Blanchard again soon!

Shortly after their departure, Brad, a veteran PID volunteer and group leader for the soon-to-be-arriving student group from Gordon College, arrived safe and sound. He immediately took to investigating the current status of the PID compound’s plumbing and water system. It’s great to have an experienced handyman around!

Although the clinic was technically closed today due to the Carneval holiday, a number of sick babies still came by for treatment. Carrie once again cared for a few of them, including for a tiny baby born at 7 months, whose mother was at the clinic with a suspected case of tuberculosis, and for a previously malnourished young boy with a bad case of scabies, whose father spent the day painting one of the exam rooms with Mike.

Aside from these few medical issues, most of the day was spent reorganizing and taking care of odds and ends around the clinic that are often too difficult to tackle with a waiting area full of patients and staff in each of the rooms.

Most importantly, however, is that Gale returned to Haiti this afternoon after her most recent trip to Guatemala!

On this evening before Carneval in Haiti, the sounds of singing and clapping are wafting in on the cool breeze. Rain last night left the morning cloudy, humid, and stagnant, but the hot sun and an intermittent breeze returned again this afternoon to dry things out.

After 10 days in Blanchard seeing patients at our clinic, Kelly returned to the US yesterday. Her presence among the team members will indeed be missed.

The YogaKids group provided yet another successful 2 days of classes with the kids from Damien and Blanchard. According to the organizers, all of the participants (including their translator Woodman) were active, engaged, and enthusiastic with the program that was put on for them.

Unfortunately, a few of the team members spent a majority of the day today in bed in the bunkhouse, sick with nausea and other symptoms. However, after lots of rest and fluids, both are up and moving around again, feeling much better in general.

Pouchon and Mike made their way into downtown Port-au-Prince yesterday afternoon to pick up the necessary supplies for the recycling program. With these supplies, the new composting pile received its first food-input today, and the trash disposal is on it’s way to being made much more effective.

Carrie did a wonderful job organizing the medical supply room once again after a new shipment of donated supplies was unloaded.

Two more team members arrived in Haiti today. They will be doing construction.

The group who arrived yesterday began a Yoga program for the children today. Two groups of children from Damien arrived on the taptap, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. They learned some Yoga, practiced some stretching, breathing, and stress relief techniques. They also did some coloring. They had a blast!
