Homesick today. Miss my husband, kids, grandkids and family. I have a love/hate relationship with my tent. Tonight I hate it because it is so hot. We saw 140 patients today and got a car load of meds from medishare. Will get more tomorrow.

Hurrah!! We are getting government electricity! The price is so low: $7200. Less than the last time. It is because we are “helping the community so much.” It amazing for the people here to finally acknowledge PID’s work in Haiti!

Today we started painting the inside of the clinic, while others built more shelves. We also had classes for the medical workers at the clinic. The guesthouse continues to go up. I went to buy groceries for the team. Not a bad day.

Hard day today. Little girl burned with hot water. Woman with filariasis so bad that there is nothing that can be done.
Tomorrow we paint the inside of the clinic.

Expansion of PID's Medical Program

With such a massive need for quality health care in Haiti, Partners In Development’s goal is to now staff our medical clinic on the ground in Haiti year round. We currently have a full-time Haitian… (Click title for full story.)

Good day today. Our little girl rushed to emergency yesterday is fine today. A mom who had a newborn came to show off the baby, we had seen her
At the clinic and rushed her to emergency with her water broken and the baby breach, she kept thanking us for everything we do. Medishare is letting us go shopping on their warehouse!! Today I began buying beds for our unfinished house a the clinic. Today the computer was fixed and maybe we will have Internet soon.

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Today was one of the best of days and the worst of days.

It was the best to find emergency rooms open that will take patients again and to be working with Medishare again. And the best to have a new organization find us and deliver free medicine.

It was the worst to have a three year old rushed from the clinic, with a police escort, seizing, and still not recovered 3 hours later. Our prayers are with her.

Oops, was having so much fun with grandkids while in Guatemala that I forgot to update! I am back in the airport leaving for Miami in a couple of minutes. Tomorrow, I will meet the new team and we will fly into Haiti together. Gena has been doing well keeping everything under control.

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

The Guatemalan team has arrived, safe but tired. Dan was missing for a while, but we are happy we found him — or he found us.

Monday, May 17, 2010

Today the clinic saw 175 patients. Before I left for the airport, one patient passed out in the line - blood sugar of 25. Another had to be taken to the hospital because one lung had no sounds, and the other… ? He needed x-rays! Got dropped at airport while Pouchon went to drop him off. After I left, a woman showed up in labor, and it took hours to find a place to take her.

Now, I am stuck in Miami, on the way to Guatemala. We had to deplane for mechanical problems. Wonder if we will leave tonight…

Sunday, May 16, 2010

Tomorrow I leave for Guatemala. The team is here until Tuesday. The clinic continues to see many people everyday
Bringing the total to almost 20000 in the last 17 weeks.

Friday, May 14, 2010

The bath houses are now finished, and we’re seeing a lot of patients — from all over Port-au-Prince. The walls of the Serome house go up today. We will begin to tear down the house of love Noel and family which was ruined during the earthquake.

Tonight it rained and the fun event of the night was taking showers in our bathing suits under the tarps. Everyone loved it as gallons of water dumped on their heads, and it was so refreshing to not worry about wasting water.

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Exhausted. Shower & bucket-bathrooms usable. Will update in the am.

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

The University of Upper Iowa has arrived safely with the rest of the team. Gena and I worked all day to get everything ready. We have one bath house ready, but by the time anyone was ready to use it, it was pouring so hard we couldn’t.

Today the clinic was mobbed. Merlin has offered to come to help on Thursday. A car drove up today and a staff person ran to get me, they said it was the national lab. But it was food for the poor. Thinking maybe they had come to offer food, I ran over. But when the staff person stepped out, she asked, “Please can you help me, my brother is so sick.”

Once again, I feel like I am in the twilight zone. The PID clinic can’t possibly be the best place to go in PAP… and, as much as I am proud of our clinic here, it is a sad statement about the health care in Haiti.

Monday, May 10, 2010

Today the clinic was very busy. Gena and I went shopping for food for the team. We also bought an inverter. Hope we get ready in time. It is quiet here.

Gena and I are here in our tents outside the clinic. The showers aren’t finished because there was a concrete shortage. We drove around for several hours looking for alternative places to stay and have a few options if things don’t progress as expected.

Saturday, May 8, 2010

Tomorrow Gena and I will leave for Haiti. If all goes well Gena will be staying until the end of July. Back to the tent.

Sunday, May 2, 2010

Today was a great 20th year anniversary for PID. It was good to see so many friends and supporters. I came home to find an email from Merlin saying that they will come and help staff the clinic on Tuesday. I will have a meeting with the director once I get back. More good news from the university of Maryland - they want to bring our 16 year old with the stomach tumor to the US. Once they confirm they have a hospital, we will begin working on travel.

Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of Partners in Development. Hope you can come to the celebration.
