There is only one thing worse than
No bug net. It is being trapped in a bug net full of Mosquitos.

Today a small business class started with 38 people. Got some meds from big Paul.

And sent a woman who was 7 month pregnant with her water broken to the hospital. Hope she and the baby do well. City not giving electricity — very frustrating.

Thank you for sponsoring our little boy .
Came today for his first feeding day just as our little twins graduated to coming only once a week. Yesterday we received our certificate from the Haitian dept of public health. One more step to go. Today we had a man come in who had had a stroke sometime ago but was having a heart attack. We couldn’t get him in to anywhere but the general hospital. We pray he will make it.

Anyone want to sponsor this little guy? He is three and weighs 16lbs. We put him in the feeding program today.

Email me at Gale@pidonline.org if so!

On my way back to Haiti . Gena leaves tomorrow:-( We just got an ultra sound machine yesterday. Used it twice today.
It is amazing what is being accomplished in our little clinic. Spent the day being totally confused by WHO , IMA and CDC, while Steve tried to sort out the Program of treatment of filariasis in Haiti. Conflicting info.

I am excited to announce that we will have a new office coordinator who will replace Hannah. Martha will starting in mid August. Look for new exciting things happening. Brooke has accepted our medical position in Haiti with the possibility of staying as long as next June if all goes well.

Camping with grand kids was rained out sooo now we are camped out in a tent in the spare bedroom. It reminds me fondly of the tent days in Haiti .
Today we received email that we have a donation of a pallet of prenatal vitamins.

We are working on new housing material that will be earthquake proof and cost less than the concrete houses. This is am exciting concept for Pid. We still are in beginning stages and don’t if it is feasible yet but watch for upcoming news here.

Today was a sad day in Haiti. Baby Makay, the one that was take to the hospital on a motorcycle, died. We knew that he would probably die, but it is sad to lose him.

Great news from Haiti! Daphnee our 21 year old diabetic is staying in the 300s without insulin!! Which we can’t use for her. The babies are doing fabulous. They are almost ready to leave our feeding program. Thank you to all who have sponsored them.

I am home. Exhausted from travel. Amazed at how long I can sleep here. No mosquito net twisted around me while the Mosquitos feast. No roosters or dogs or goats making noise all night.
Phone calls that go through and email that works. I am happy to be home but I miss the work. I know that I will never be the same after this year of the earthquake.

On the way home. Had to go to airport early because we had a two year old with meningitis who had to leave for the hospital right away. Our ambulance and transports are all done with the same car. Gena is coming to the end of her commitment. It will be sad when she leaves. Looking for a long term medical replacement. Know anyone!! Long days , no pay ,but very rewarding.

Today we repaired the car. Had a woman in labor come in with placenta previa. Rushed her off. Visited public health for our appointment/ no show from them. Had 160 people in the clinic, picked up Kit at the airport.
Have no electricity. I think I just heard pouchon pull up and now it sounds like the broken generator is running. I love my head lamp. I am happy Gena is still here. Tomorrow I can leave for home.
Yeah it is the broken generator revived. We Have electricity again.

Today was public health meeting day. Instead two babies were rushed to medishare. Baby one showed up at 8 , very blue, with his aunt. The baby had been born at 7 at home. After trying to suction the baby , Gena hoped on a motocycle, with baby, driver and translator was off. We still do not know if this baby will live. Prayer for this little one. The two year old from yesterday is semi conscious and still at medishare as is the aids baby. We brought in another baby this afternoon with a hemotoma. The car blew up at medishare and had to be towed by a taptap back home. It has been a long day.

Tomorrow another great team leaves.
We began tetanus and dipthera vaccinations today. Because we Had two very serious emergencies and so many rechecks, labs and a womens clinic we finished late today. I was frustrated when I learned that several huge NGO s working in medicine left PAP and another one will leave soon.
Miss a chance have a PID interview on channel 4 for the 6 Month anniversary of the earthquake .
Tomorrow the ongoing saga with public health continues. More news on this tomorrow.

I had to add some good things about today. I have electricity in my room. I have a fan and a nice new bug net. One of the members of the team built me a desk and two shelves for my room. I think it just got better than my tent.
We also got a taptap full of supplies for the clinic.
It is so nice to have family here with me.

Went to village one (by the pig farm) tonight to see a 7 year with cp and cf. It was end of life kzot. While there we saw two other boys who live in the tent with the 7 year old, one with a massive leg infection, and other with ringworm.

I am overwhelmed by the sickness and the smell of pigs.

We then visited a 36 year old with filariasis and 4 stage cervical cancer.

It is a clear reminder to me of our mission. I struggled not to cry.

Tonight we had a special treat of a singing show by the neighborhood kids, complete with decorations
Sorry pic is had to see.

I amazed at what is accomplished in this clinic every day. I consider myself truly blessed to have been able to see this through every step of the way. Blessed with all the amazing people who have helped on this journey to build and staff the program.

I am anxious as we move forward and expand medical care.

Can we do it?

Hurray! We finished
Our post earthquake house and today the keys were presented to Sonia. She was so happy.

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

Today was a hard day. We saw our first AIDS baby. Eighteen days old and looked like a tiny skeleton. Many emergencies. I am proud of the clinic. We continue see so many people.

Back in Haiti again. The team all arrived and so did the luggage. Tomorrow the twins come in and our diabetic girl, will help feed and care for them.

Last week, the team got to help with surgeries for some of our patients, and were filmed and now may end up on the TV show The Doctors.

Back in the US. Got my missing suitcases this afternoon.

Gena just texted to say we have five people going for surgery tomorrow!! Hurray! Guatemalan team should be back too! 6 medical people left in Haiti with two more to arrive on Saturday.

Tuesday I go back with a new team — my daughter Cherith will come to Haiti for the first time. She has been many times to our Guatemala branch. So excited.
