Four out of the team of six arrived today in Haiti. Two had a flight cancellation, they will come tomorrow. This team will be putting on a program for the children in Damien, the village by the pig farm.

Today, we began using the new medical record books sent by Kate and Jon. They will be given to each patient in hopes that they will return with them each time they visit this clinic and other clinics for better continuity of care. Each is sealed in a Ziploc bag for safe keeping.

We just converted one of our exam rooms into a triage room for better privacy. Today was the first day it was used as a triage room. It is now also staffed by a nurse.

Last work day for team Guatemala

This has been a week of hard work for this group of high school kids. They have done work they would never had done at home. When we went to leave the village today , many cried because they were going to miss the kids so much. Some cried because for the first time the reality of their lives and the lives of the people of the village confused them. Many will leave here ready to make a difference in the world.

Guatemala

Starting to add up the impact this team is making is truly amazing. They finished pouring the clinic floor today. They are tired but joyful. I think that they are learning that serving can hurt, especially in the muscles. Another birthday today with a beautiful cake fashioned by Laureen out of ring dings.

Rilbert, the single father with the very sick baby who has been coming in for the past couple weeks, worked with Mike today. They cleaned out the incinerator and dug a hole to bury some of the trash. Ann cared for his sick baby while he worked. He was very grateful for this small job and worked very hard!

Today the medical group went up to Zunilto to do a clinic. The rest of the group spent the morning in the trenches. Because of all the hard work today the floor of the new clinic and the foundation of the new house will be ready to pour tomorrow.

It was a wonderful site to see all 100 kids skipping and smiling down the road coming to the VBS again. The team is doing a great job.

I really love the people of this village. It is a blessing that they are so open to sharing their lives and village with us. Pray for Luis an 8 year old who came to the clinic yesterday. He is paralyzed in his legs.

Today a very sick elderly woman and little boy came in to our clinic in Haiti. They are being treated for typhoid and malaria. They are so sick we could not send them home, and they are spending the night sleeping soundly in beds in one of our exam rooms.

Today we began a program here at the clinic for some of the children in Damien. We had younger kids come in the morning, and older kids in the afternoon. Each group spent a fun-filled two hours playing games and doing crafts. They all came from the pig farm dressed in their nicest clothes. It was so nice for them to get out of that environment for a few hours. We will continue this program for the remainder of the time the team is here.

We are just beginning our recycling program here! The kids were very eager to go around collecting bottles and other recylables, and they did a great job. We hope to develop this program over the next few months so that it can provide some jobs and keep Blanchard’s streets cleaner!

Today at the clinic in Haiti, we had a lot of patients. The dental assistant continued seeing dental patients today in preparation for the dental team.

A woman who was treated yesterday for congestive heart failure returned today feeling worse. A couple of our volunteers and a translator took the patient to Doctors Without Borders by moto. They couldn’t get in originally because the Security Guard, taser in hand, said they did not have the proper ID. They called the director to let them in, and were introduced to the medical director. Once inside, they were impressed by the facilities. The patient was able to get her x-ray and a diagnosis.

At the construction site, we continue to carry rocks and mix concrete.

Today was the team’s first full work day in Hait in the clinic and on the construction site. In the clinic, we saw a 32 woman come in to see us with breast pain. We did an ultrasound and found out that she has a large cancerous mass. She left the clinic immediately, before we could even tell her. We hope that she returns so we can help her.

A 12-year-old boy was brought in by a Good Samaritan after we closed. The boy was hit by a moto. He was treated for multiple abrasions, and the Good Samaritan took him home.

On the construction site, we sifted sand and carried rocks! The foundation is progressing.
