Went to the village to see the new clinic land. The leaders group all made a welcome back banner and cards for me. They are so excited about the children’s program. There are 200 kids signed up with two hundred kids on the waiting list. They want to know if we can do two next year. It is nice to feel so wanted.

Dr Tamara left Haiti today wishing she could stay longer. Alison is working hard at the clinic and the two teenage guys who came with her are doing construction and loving it.

A Fond Farewell

After working with PID for the past ten years Lisa Lassey will be leaving PID as the Director of Program Development on Nov 1st. This is a sad day for PID. Lisa has given much time and energy to the work of PID. For many years she missed her oldest daughter birthday to lead a team. She spent many hours working after the earthquake to organize volunteers, book teams and send supplies. We are overjoyed she has agreed to continue with the PID newsletter.  For all of those who wish to say good bye  in person she will be at the Annual Dinner Event on Nov 13th. We love you and will miss you in all three countries. Best wishes in all your future endeavors.

I forgot to mention that yesterday Alison and company arrived in Haiti. Alison will be working in the clinic and her son and his friend will be doing construction.

Yesterday I landed in Guatemala. It is only the second time since the earthquake. It turned out to be a lot more emotional for me than I expected. I feel like I deserted everyone and I just cried. I can’t wait to see my friends in the villages.

In Haiti, there a few cases of cholera showing up in Cite Soliel. Still people who have traveled back and forth from the contaminated river. Brooke is ready and Dr Tamara are there with the rest of the Haitian staff.

Pray for them and the Haitian people.

PID's Statement on Cholera Outbreak In Haiti

PID's Statement on Cholera Outbreak In Haiti

On Wednesday, we first heard the word that there was possible cholera. It was finally confirmed 24 hours later by the WHO, the CDC and the health department. We knew it was far from us geographically.

Today, we heard that it is in the Arbonite River and is traveling. Brooke left the medical conference early to talk to the clinic staff. They will be prepared to deal with it if it becomes necessary and have all the medicine in place if it becomes necessary.

Please see the attached link for the full statement regarding the outbreak on our website.

Today we had so many sick people. One of my friends from the tent village is dying . She is 36 and has 4 stage cancer. Pray for her. Wekenson is almost walking. We have many new babies on the program. Tomorrow I go home, but it is hard to leave, so much unfinished paperwork .

Things appear to be going well with Benite and Brooke in charge. I am so happy to see the clinic using the ultrasound and the EKG . Many new babies in the feeding program.

Great to have Brooke in Haiti. The Haitian Staff is also starting to email. More communication the better. I hear that Robin and Pat are doing a great job. They are also cooking up a storm.

Home again. Before I Left our little Wekenson, the 3 year old, began to crawl. I can’t wait until he starts to walk.

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Mackenzie left today and Pat has arrived. Already working hard.

Another busy emergency day. One day old with difficulty breathing and a temp sent out. Two places didn’t have docs. Last place finally took the baby and all is well. We sent our 18 year old with the neck mass to the dentist/ he knows what she has . She is now having treatment and hopefully will be well soon.

Many emergencies in the clinic today and yesterday. Many new babies and a lot of sick kids. Scrounging for meds. Benite and Brooke went to the MSPP
Meeting, think we found “the real head.” I went to the lawyer, not impressed.

Great day! Visited MSPP - very nice people. Tomorrow will go to UNICEF.
1/2 the team went home. Miss them. Today we had a big emergency- a 1 year girl with febrile seizures and pneumonia came in. But with all our new equipment, including an oxygen tank , Robin, Dr Sem and Brooke worked together as a great team.

Sunday, October 3, 2010

Today the team went to Jacmel. I stayed behind to have a meeting with
John and finish organizing the pharmacy. Robin cleaned and organized the emergency room and Brooke got us an
Oxygen tank for her old employer.

Tonight we went to the tent city. We brought a tent for McClory’s family with their food. I cried. McClry was layong and screaming( he has seizures and CP) His grandmother is sitting on the tent floor rocking a baby. The tent was too big for their lot but we half put it up and they will finish in the morning. The tent city is beyond words. The tents are breaking from the wind and rain. It is deplorable. My life has changed so much this year. I wonder what the new year will bring? I have traveled with the kindest, hard working, and quirkiest people on earth. People who want to make a difference.

Oh no it looks like a chicken pox outbreak. Three kids today. Hope there will be no more.
